The National World War II Memorial was dedicated in May 2004, nearly 60 years after the war's end. Most WWII veterans are in their eighty's and ninety's. Of the sixteen million who served in uniform, less than three million remain. They are dying at the rate of 1200-1500 every day. Time is of the essence.
In 2006, a community-wide project called Honor Flight Tennessee Valley began, with its' sole purpose to honor veterans at their memorials in Washington DC. Since its beginning, almost seven hundred WWII Veterans have completed applications to be honored on a one-day, all expense paid round-trip from Huntsville, AL to Washington, DC.
The inaugural trip for Honor Flight Tennessee Valley was held on 4 April 2007, carrying 14 WWII Veterans. The second flight was on 15 September 2007, and carried 117 WWII Veterans. In 2008, Honor Flight's goal is to fly 500 WWII Veterans to their memorials on four Flights: 19 April; May 13; 13 September; and 18 October. Donations have been received to pay for the April flight, but Honor Flight must raise $300K to pay for the remaining three flights.
